Guildford CC Caps

For the first time in 2014, Guildford CC will present caps to those players making their debuts in the Development League XI and Under 15 Premier League XI.

At present, caps are awarded to any player who represents Guildford's Saturday 1st XI league team with the year they make their debut embroidered on the side of the cap.

This is the pinnacle for any junior or senior player at the club. The awarding of caps to the U15 PL and those who represent the DL XI is there to inspire our young cricketers to attain all three caps during their playing days at the club. Guildford's unique and extraordinary cricket history is something we should feel very proud to be part of.

Special Guest Coach

We were delighted to welcome former Guildford, Surrey and Nottinghamshire opening batsman Darren Bicknell to the final winter nets of the season where he provided some coaching to the senior men.

Darren scored 19,931 first class runs during a 19 year career.

Captain's Corner - 4th XI 2013 Season Report

Following a year in which Guildford won 10 and lost only two games on the way to winning the 4th XI West Division in 2012 was always going to be tough, especially given the clear step-up in the standard of cricket, so to win six out of 18 and finish 6th in a league containing the strongest clubs in Surrey was a fantastic achievement.

Guildford struggled early in the season in the limited overs format, often getting into winning positions but lacking in experienced heads to drive home the advantage. Signs of improvement in this format showed throughout the season and the experience gained by the youngsters of dealing with pressure situations will stand them in great stead for the 2014 campaign. Once the longer form kicked in, the side fared better, with four wins.

Initially the bowling was led by Andy Green (19 at 7), whilst Mike Tilley (17 at 8) and Mainul Hossain (7 at 16) formed a formidable opening partnership towards the end of the season, keeping runs to a minimum. Although overall results show that the side struggled to build on these starts, there were real positives in the development of Bradley Eustace and Harrison Charles, who both bowled with good pace, taking regular wickets, whilst Will Jenner made some useful contributions and showed real improvement in his consistency.

Lack of runs was an issue, reflected by the fact that only three players scored more than 100 runs or averaged more than 20, with only four 50s registered throughout the year. Plenty of players got starts, but these were rarely converted into match-winning innings. One notable exception was Philip Hodgson (228 at 38), who, as captain for the first half of the season, led from the front with some vital knocks, including two match winning half centuries. Youngsters Benji Thomas and Nathan Tilley showed great potential with promising innings at important times – ones to watch in the future.

Guildford CC on the One Show

Guildford Cricket Club will soon be featured on The One Show. Phil Tufnell came down to Woodbridge Road to make a feature about pitch advertising and its relationship with the artists who were painting hundreds of years ago.

The One Show logo was painted on the outfield in an elongated shape that looks normal to the camera. This perspective allows it to be much more noticeable to television viewers and is what we see on the biggest matches.

Tuffers was at our ground to explain just how that technique was used by Holbein more than 400 years ago when he painted his great works. It will be broadcast on The One Show in the next couple of weeks.

Captain's Corner - 3rd XI 2013 Season Report

On the back of the wild success that was the 2012 season, the 3rd XI found the challenge of stepping up to The Premier League to be a bridge too far. Not helped by the loss of a number of players throughout the club, it was rare that skipper Tim Goodman had the same firepower at his disposal in both the batting and bowling departments that became a luxury in 2012.

Notable performances through the year were the narrow defeat away to Sunbury where a small run chase, on a pitch not dissimilar to the neighbouring 1st XI wicket, proved too much for an inexperienced middle order. This at least showed the 3s that they could compete at this standard but sadly, it was not until the back end of the season, away to Beddington on the 13th July, that they registered their only victory. It was no coincidence that the strong XI that took the field that day was almost identical to that which had dominated the 1st Division and finished undefeated in 2012.

Every challenging season at least allows for experience to be gained and it was good to see a number of promising performances from youngsters Nathan Tilley, Jonny Charles and Alex Green. Credit should also go to Chad Murrin who frequently battled through injury to take the field whenever possible and who also spent a lot of time captaining the side whilst the full-time skipper was drafted into the 2nd XI.

Return to the 1st Division should hopefully bring a more successful and enjoyable season and see Guildford once again challenging for the league title. Also of great help will be the move to the much better facilities at Brook CC and Dunsfold CC.

News from the Cricket Committee

New players

The cricket committee has been working very hard during the off season to strengthen the senior playing membership for 2014. We expect to see 8-10 new players pushing for places and creating the competitive environment which is so essential at a club like Guildford CC.

3rd & 4th XI home ground

The senior mens 3rd & 4th XIs will now play the majority of their home fixtures at either Brook CC or Dunsfold CC, two of the best grounds in Surrey.

Outdoor nets

You will be aware that we have experienced problems with the outdoor nets at Woodbridge Road for a while now. Work will be carried out to improve the nets prior to the start of the season to improve the consistency of the surface.

Indoor Season Review 2013

A strong set of performances by the Guildford CC Indoor team over the winter ended disappointingly in 'Finals Day' semi-final defeat to a very strong South Nutfield side.

The season started brightly with Guildford instantly clicking in the shorter, dryer format of the game. A strong core team, littered with the occasional star appearances recorded four solid wins during the league season, losing only to an indoor specialist Guildford City and the wily five men of Merrow CC. We qualified from the league second place but just couldn't muster the strength to beat our Surrey rivals and progress to regional knock-out.

Tim Goodman, often plagued by undulating 3rd XI wickets, found form on the flatter indoor pitch, honing his famed Chinese cut and offering a solid foundation by retiring early on a number of occasions. Aqeel Iqbal provided a touch of flair with the bat and, when called upon, offered variation with the ball. Lasith Yasakethu was ever reliable, even when selected 15 minutes before the start, amassing runs with the bat and producing the consistency of line and length that any captain would pay for. Josh Rix, the skipper and last of the core players, started brightly with both bat and ball but tapered noticeably toward the end of the season, succumbing to a 4 ball duck in the semi-final.

James Aston, when loaned from Cardiff University CC, bowled impeccably; his pace and movement far too much for opposition batsmen. Ben Walter featured with the gloves before leaving indefinitely for Australia, standing up even to the 'pace' of Josh Rix and was able to use his limbs to full advantage registering a top score of (roughly) 66, a real highlight for the season. Matt Truman, when not too busy completing his studies to play, brought some respectability behind the stumps that we much craved. Jack Cunningham umpired from square leg with aplomb, joining the side in defeat during the semi-final.

Finally, Ed Bailey must be praised as highly as anyone for turning up every Sunday, without fail, to diligently record the score.

Captain's Corner - 2nd XI 2013 Season Report

A difficult year for the 2nd XI ended in a relatively comfortable league position for another season that was looking tough to achieve after a poor beginning to the year. It would be fair to say that the season was split into two halves with the team really struggling until mid-July when an influx of players released from school commitments ensured the club as a whole had more personnel to choose from.

The batting during the first half of the season was the primary reason for the struggles of the team, apart from Julian Hare, no batsmen really imposed themselves on games and made significant scores. The bowlers, however, performed very well and consistently dug the batsmen out of the hole and almost won games on numerous occasions. Phil Nichols, Chris Weill and James Aston all led the bowling during this time, backed up with good performances by Neil Harding and Tom Shrives.

During the second half of the season, the batting started to match the levels previously set by the bowlers and as such performances and results improved, culminating in victories over Banstead, Reigate Priory and Sutton to ensure Premier League survival. Brothers Nick and Jonathan French scored big and important runs during the second half which, in conjunction with aggressive opening batting from Henry Straw, allowed platforms to be built for significant scores. Cameron Spence and the younger French added to the good bowling performances already mentioned to show how a full strength 2nd XI could have challenged for the top of the league.

With some good recruitment over the winter to the club, the 2nd XI should be able to contest with the best teams of the league and stay safely away from the drop zone. The one benefit of our lack of availability this year has been the exposure of some of the younger players to regular 2nd team cricket and in Jonathan French, Freddie McMillan, Alex Sweet and Jonny Charles we have found some quality juniors who will play an increasingly important role next year. As ever, our thanks to Ed Bailey for his scoring and Peter Twitchens for umpiring as well as Dave, Kev and Jane for the food.

Captains

We are delighted to inform our members that Jeremy Greaves will continue his role as 1st XI captain and head coach, Henry Straw will again skipper the 2nd team, Jon Burrowes will captain the 4th XI for the first time and we are pleased to welcome Katherine Robson as Ladies' captain. We hope to announce the new 3rd XI captain in the New Year.

Behind the scenes

Preparations behind the scenes for next season have continued over the last couple of months, including a determined effort to increase senior playing members and Chad's efforts in procuring a second ground for our members for the 2015 season, news to follow later this winter.

Flora Dora

It is with regret that Guildford will no longer play in this local tournament in 2014 due to the unfortunate waning of interest from local clubs in recent years. Guildford has proudly played in the Flora Dora for around 70 years and it is likely that this will signal the end of the competition.

Dean Skidmore becomes Honorary Life Member

At the Autumn General Meeting in October Dean Skidmore was made an Honorary Life Member of Guildford Cricket Club. Dean has had a glittering playing career with the club and has more recently been involved in junior coaching and supporting senior cricket.

Dean joined Guildford CC in 1985, making his 1st X1 debut in 1988 at the tender age of 17. He opened the batting in his early days before becoming a dominant middle order bat for Guildford during the 90s and into the 2000s. Dean's skills as a batsman showed themselves whenever Guildford needed runs, particularly when chasing down totals. When he turned 30 he became a seam bowler who the captain would turn to whenever an end needed tying up, but he could take wickets too with best figures of 8-45. Dean was a very supportive senior player particularly to captains Mark Lane and Tim Walter. We hope his playing days aren’t totally behind him and he continues his strong association with our club. Congratulations Dean.

Second Ground Update

As those of you who have played there will be aware, the Stoke Recreation Ground hasn't been of the standard we expect from our second venue over the past season.  While its proximity to Woodbridge Road is obviously a positive, the wicket, outfield and facilities haven't been satisfactory and therefore the club is taking steps to identify a suitable replacement in the future, which, in the short term will see the men's 3rd and 4th XIs playing half of their home games at Brook Cricket Club in 2014.  Chad Murrin and Tim Walter have been in discussions regarding more long term options and we will update you with further details when they are available.

Replacing the 'Clubhouse' site

New website for Availability
and Selection...

Over the past few seasons, the club has used clubhouseapp.com to manage player availability and team selection. After experiencing a few administrative issues with the Clubhouse site, the Cricket Committee has approved a club-wide transfer to Pitchero.com.

What makes  different?

Pitchero is better suited to a club like Guildford which has multiple sections, and for members, players and parents that need to manage availability for more than one team. Junior section parents in particular should find the new site much less time-consuming as you can manage multiple players from a single user account.

The free Pitchero mobile app, through which you can set your availability, view match information and confirm your selection, is available on Apple iOS from the App Store. An Android version is expected by the start of next season.

Signing up is easy

Tug's top tips for :

Each month over the winter Anthony 'Tug' Gamble will provide tips on features on Pitchero to help us all in adapting to the new system.

November's tip: Signing up...

Players: When choosing your player membership, select the team that your appeared for most in previous seasons only. This is no way restricts who you play for in 2014, it just prevents duplication of player profiles.

Parents: Firstly, sign-up using your own details. On the second page, select the 'Parent' membership and then list all 'Juniors' and their age-groups for the 2014 season. You'll be able to manage each Junior's availability from your profile.

Social Members/Supporters: You are very welcome to join the site as a 'Supporter' or 'Club Member'. This will give you access to fixtures, results, match reports & club news.
