Review of Men's Cricket for 2013: The Surrey Championship

1st XI

Guildford’s 1st XI currently plays in the Surrey Championship1st XI ECB Premier Division. The 1st XI ECB Premier Division is the highest league of Club Cricket in Surrey, and the objective of the 1st XI is to be as successful as possible. As such, selection for the 1st XI is based entirely on merit.

Captain & Players

The current 1st XI Captain is Club Coach Jeremy Greaves. Jeremy is a middle order batter and right arm medium bowler. Jeremy has several year’s captaincy experience across both Kent and Surrey and will be leading Guildford for the second time in 2013.

The Club’s overseas player for 2012 is Matt Teale. Matt moved to Guildford from Christchurch, New Zealand in 2011, and enjoyed a successful first season, taking 35 League wickets. Matt is a right arm fast medium bowler and middle / lower order batter.

The Club’s Surrey Professional for 2012 is Tom Jewell. Tom has been a Guildford player since 2008 and made his first class debut for Surrey that same year against Loughborough UCCE. A right arm fast medium all-rounder, Tom signed a full contract with Surrey CCC in December 2010.

Fixtures

Matches 1 – 4 and 14 - 18 of the season are 50 overs games.

Points are awarded as follows:

• Win 9 points.

• Loss 0 points.

There is 1 bonus point available for a win by 4 wickets / 40 runs (or by avoiding defeat by such a margin).

Matches 5 – 13 of the season are 120 over timed matches.The team batting first may bat for a maximum of 66 overs, and may declare at any point. The remaining overs are available to the team batting second.

Points are awarded as follows:

• Win 13 points.

• Loss 0 points.

• Winning’ draw 4 points.

• Losing draw 1 point.

Winning vs. Losing draw is determined by net run rate. 

2nd XI

Guildford’s 2nd XI currently plays in the Surrey Championship 2nd XI Premier Division. The objective of the 2nd XI is to be as successful as possible, but also to prepare players for the 1st XI. As such, selection for the 2nd XI is based largely on merit, but will also give regard to the immediate needs of the 1st XI.

Captain

The current 2nd XI Captain is Henry Straw. A fast medium bowler and genuine rabbit with the bat, Phil is hopeful that his third year in charge will see the 2s challenge for the Premier League Title

Fixtures

A full copy of the Club’s 2nd XI fixtures for 2014 will be made available just as soon as they are confirmed.

Matches 1 - 4 and 15 - 18 are 50 over games.

 Points are awarded as follows:

 • Win 9 points.

 • Loss 0 points.

3rd XI

Guildford’s 3rd XI currently plays in the Surrey Championship 3rd XI First Division. The objective of the 3rd XI is to be as successful as possible, but also to prepare players for the 2nd XI and look to develop future 1st XI players. As such, selection for the 3rd XI is based largely on merit, but will also give regard to the immediate needs of the 2nd XI and the development of future 1st XI players.

Captain

The current 3rd XI Captain is Tim Goodman. Tim has been a Club member and stalwart of the 3rd XI for several seasons, and has at long last assumed the title of 3rd XI captain. A fluent top order batter, Tim is hoping to secure promotion back to the 3rd XI Premier Division in 2012. 

Fixtures

A full copy of the Club’s 3rd XI fixtures for 2014 will be published very shortly.

All matches are 100 over timed matches.

The team batting first may bat for a maximum of 55 overs, and may declare at any point. The remaining overs are available to the team batting second.

Points are awarded as follows:

• Win 13 points.

• Loss 0 points.

• Winning’ draw 4 points.

• Losing draw 1 point.

Winning vs. Losing draw is determined by net run rate.  

4th XI

Guildford’s 4th XI currently plays in the Surrey Championship 4th XI Western Division. The objective of the 4th XI is to be as successful as possible, but also to prepare players for the 3rd XI and introduce juniors to adult cricket. As such, selection for the 4th XI will give regard to the immediate needs of the 3rd XI and the inclusion of capable juniors.

Captain

The current 4th XI Captain is Phil Hodgson. A prolific top order batter, Phil has successfully integrated a number of juniors into adult cricket over the last few years.

Fixtures

All matches are 90 over timed matches. The team batting first may bat for a maximum of 50 overs, and may declare at any point. The remaining overs are available to the team batting second.
