Junior Section Newsletter – May ’15

Posted by:

Hopefully you’ve all had the chance to play some cricket between the showers. It’s not all been plain sailing with the U14s suffering the most unusual reason for a postponement – a Scout Jamboree had booked their opponents’ facilities and half their team were taking part!

Cup Round Up

Under 15s began the defence of their <strong”>National ECB Cup title with a walkover but now face Cranleigh in the next round.

The U13s, national finalists last season, overwhelmed their Blackheath opponents, restricting them to 52-7 from 20 overs with an exhibition of tight bowling and sharp fielding. They then powered to victory in only the 7th over. Their next opponents are still tbc!

In the West Surrey Cup first through to the second round were the u11s after their opponents conceded the match. They now have a home tie against Woking and Horsell.

The U12s travelled to Shepperton, and despite numerous District call ups were still too strong for the home side, restricting them to 62 -5 in their 20 overs and then knocking off the runs by half way. They now host Epsom.

Sadly the U10s couldn’t convert home advantage against East Molesey and the U9s fell to Teddington.

Still to enter the fray are the U14 side who had a first round bye and now face Valley End and the U17s whose competition gets underway next month.

Test Match tickets available Sunday 24 May

U14 Manager, Aidan Jarvis, has 6 tickets for the 4th day of the NZ test match at Lord’s on Sun 24 May which he now can’t use.

3 x adult and 3 x U16, to be used as pairs (x1 adult and x1 child).

The tickets for the New Zealand Test match at Lords on Sunday 24 May are FREE to the first junior section people who request. The 3 pairs of dad/son or daughter tickets are for the Compton Stand and with the weather looking fine in London this is a great opportunity to see the English Test team flex their skills against the black caps led by Brendan McCullum.

Cricket Festival 14-18 June and 2 August 2015

When Surrey come to Woodbridge Road, the tea tent and raffle are organised and run by parents of the junior members of the club to raise funds for the junior section.

These events have been very successful in the past, raising several thousand pounds for the club each year.

We need help this year from across all age groups to make this another successful fundraising year.

Raffle prizes – if anyone could contribute a prize for the raffle that would be fantastic.

Tea Tent – we will need volunteers to help run the tent over all 5 days so if you could spare some time and come along please let us know.

Homemade cakes sell tremendously well at this event so if you could contribute cakes that would be great.

If you can help with any aspects of the event please let Kate Perceval know. kperceval@me.com

Congratulations to opener George Griffiths who hit a record unbeaten 164 for the U15s in their Premier League 40 overs match.

George has progressed through the junior ranks and was part of the victorious ECB Cup winning side last season.

Scoring Apps, Scoresheets, Umpiring and Guides
Apps – As well as the basics, all the popular ones can do lots of whizzy things such as wagonwheels, worms, manhattans if you wish – and all have quirks! (and can be weather prone)

TCS- Total Cricket scorer.- a slimmed down version of the county system – you can download fixtures from Play cricket and upload scorecards afterwards. Doesnt do pairs. App Version is £4.99 https://www.totalcricketscorer.com/TCSWeb/TCSHome.aspx

Cric Hq – another favourite with similar capabilities. Now Free. You can set up Pairs scoring and I believe can upload scorecards. https://www.crichq.com

NX Cricket – also capable of doing Pairs. Comes with a screen shot guide.  They can all be a bit of trial and error to set up, though there are some Youtube guides and online user groups for them all! Try a fantasy match at home to get started!  http://www.nxtreme.com/iphone/nxCricket-HD.html

Umpiring, scoring and scoresheets
If you wish to get to grips with normal scoresheet scoring instead, we have set up a section giving examples of symbols, umpire signals and score sheets, including those for Pairs.  Thanks to Mervyn, the U12 manage,r for allowing us to use his guides.

New U9 managers

Welcome to Tim Hargrave, Tony Hunt and Steve Cater.

U14 Team

New this year is an U14 team with James Relph, Paul Butler and Aidan Jarvis in charge.

Winkworth Estate Agents

Sponsorship & Guildford Beer Festival

As part of one of our main club sponsorships, Winkworth Estate Agents promote the Guildford Beer Festival in and around the Guildford/Surrey area with signage preceding the event.

They have asked the Guildford CC membership to have a board outside their homes for the 2/3 weeks prior to the Beer Festival. As a thank you gesture, each household will receive two free tickets to the Beer Festival on June 12th and 13th.

Those that are willing to have a board outside, please let me know, or alternatively please email Ben Holden at ben.holden@snapsponsorship.com. Ben works for SNAP Sponsorship and they help to support the cricket club in finding new sponsorship.

I look forward to your responses and showing main club sponsor, Winkworth, our support.
