Newly signed lease at Guildford Cricket Club

Posted by:

I am delighted to tell you that this week we have signed a new lease. This lease ensures the Club’s future at Woodbridge Road for the next 75 years.

This is as a result of a new and unique arrangement with Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Cricket Club. The Trustee of the site (GBC) have agreed a Headlease with a new Management Company (ManCo). The ManCo board is made up of three Directors from GBC, two Directors from SCCC and two Directors from GCC. ManCo, in turn, have signed an Underlease with GCC and SCCC as the summer tenants.

Amongst other agreements, this lease provides for;

– The full GCC cricket season (30 March to 30 September)
– Agreed access for SCCC
– The continuation of the Guildford Beer Festival
– 1st class cricket to be played at the ground
– Funding for GCC
– Pavilion use for GCC during the winter
– 1st class standard cricket ground

The security of a 75 year lease will allow us to plan for the long term and having the enviable benefit of an ECB 1st class cricket facility (looked after by SCCC) will enable us to continue to attract enthusiastic cricketers. We intend to make full use of this new arrangement so we can build and invest in the Club for you, our members.

The Club is healthy and we are already seeing the benefits of recruiting our first Director of Cricket, Olly Birts. All sections are growing and embracing all forms of cricket with playing membership levels already geater than 2019. We want every one of our players to thoroughly enjoy their cricket, be able to develop their game with us, be role models to others and help promote this wonderful game across the Club and Surrey.

We want to play our part locally in increasing participation and accessibility in a team sport that can bring communities together and does so much for personal growth and development.

My thanks are due to the great many people who have worked on this project for nearly ten years, particularly our President, David Watts. We very much look forward to working with GBC and SCCC to bring greater benefit of the site to the Guildford community.

Let’s now make the most of it !
