The good weather has meant that all the early season friendly matches have been completed. The 1st XI won at Basingstoke and Dorking, but lost narrowly at Beckenham. The Surrey Championship league fixtures start next Saturday, 6th May with local derbies. The 1st XI travel to newly promoted Cranleigh, with the 2nd XI at home against Cranleigh. Teams playing at Woodbridge Road are using temporary facilities, comprising a large marquee at the Railway End. Spectators are welcome and should use the Railway End gate and park on the grass. There is seating available for spectators both inside and outside the marquee.
Ist XI cricket at Woodbridge Road
Guildford play Normandy in the Royal London Club Championship 2nd Round at Woodbridge Road on Sunday, 14th May (1.00 pm start).
Guildford’s first home Surrey Championship 1st XI Premier Division league match is on Saturday, 20th May. This is against Ashtead (12 noon start – 50 overs). All support is welcome.
Overseas player 2017
Our overseas player this year is Lachy Holmes. Lachy (22) comes from Melbourne, where he plays for the famous St Kilda Cricket Club.
Lachy broke into the St Kilda Men’s Premier 1st XI side in the 2016-17 season, ending with top score of 140 and the Player of the Year award.
A friendly and personable young man, Lachy has a BA in International Business. He is interested in work experience with a Guildford-based company whilst he is here. If you have any ideas on possible work opportunities, please call Chad Murrin (07767 2245632) in the first instance.
New Social Members
Strengthening social membership base is a key priority for the Club’s Committee. Because of the limited facilities until the new Pavilion is complete, subscriptions have been held at low levels and members renewing or joining have received a complimentary ticket to the Guildford Beer Festival.
It is pleasing to report that we have signed up 35 new Social Members so far.
The Guildford Beer Festival
The Club first hosted a Beer Festival in 2010. This year will be the 8th GBF. The event has become very popular and we are on track for a total attendance of around 5,000 on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd June.
Tickets are available online from the GBF website and in person from the Guildford Tourist Information Centre at 155 High Street, Guildford GU1 3AJ.
Once again, the GBF will be held in marquees and outdoors at the Railway End of the Sports Ground. The Beer Tent will feature beers from local independents and micro-breweries. A separate bar will have an extensive offering of ciders, wine and soft drinks. For the first time, we will also have the Silent Pool Gin Bar, offering locally distilled gin and spirits.
The GBF is the Club’s major fundraising operation. It requires a large volunteer effort. Social members (including new ones!) are welcome to join the team. Help is welcome front of house in the busy Admissions area, as well as serving in the bars. Full training is provided. All volunteers receive a GBF T-shirt and a complimentary meal voucher.
If you may be interested to help on Friday evening 2nd June or Saturday afternoon or evening 3rd June, please contact Chad Murrin (07767 224632 or firstname.lastname@example.org).
New Pavilion update
The contractor expects to hand over the ground floor changing room in mid-July and then the rest of the building on 14th August.
The present plan is for a “soft opening” attended by Guildford CC Members (including Social members) on Wednesday 16th August, which is the date we play the Club Cricket Conference. Members are asked to diarise this date. Further information will follow.
The Official Opening by the Mayor of Guildford will be later in August
