Selection for teams in the Adult Section at Guildford CC is done by the Selection Team*. Meetings are held on a weekly basis after training on Tuesday evenings. Teams are published later that evening.

While the Cricket Chairman and Club Coach have an input in selection, the captains have the final say on who is in their team (1st XI captain first, then 2nd XI captain etc.). This is done as it is vital that captains are happy with the players in their team.

Selection for each team in the Adult Section reflects the balance between performance and development.

Performance Development
1st XI 90% 10%
2nd XI 60% 40%
3rd XI 30% 70%
4th XI 0% 100%

Selection is driven by five criteria:

  • Performance.
  • Ability and potential.
  • Experience.
  • Training and commitment (including availability).
  • Attitude and discipline (including behaviour).

If a player is available for selection, they are expected to accept selection, regardless of which team they have been picked to play for. It is unacceptable for a player to refuse to play based on the team they have been picked for. All members play for Guildford CC, not for a particular team within the club.

Dropped players will receive a phone call from the relevant captain informing them why they have been dropped and advice / targets / what they need to do to be selected again.

Decisions taken by the Selection Team are final. However, members of the Selection Team are human and will make mistakes – all are happy to be proved wrong! If a player has issues with selection, they should speak to the Club Coach in the first instance. In the second instance, they should speak to the Cricket Chairman.

On the rare occasion that a professional player (e.g. with Surrey CCC) becomes available for selection late in the week (i.e. after the selected teams have been published), they will be accommodated in the 1st XI. This is an exceptional and infrequent occurrence and is unfortunate for the player in each team who misses out.

*The Selection Team consists of the Cricket Chairman, Club Coach and the Adult Section captains (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th team captains only – i.e. not including the U18, U19 and U21 team captains).
