This year’s championship visitors are Northants, who last played at Guildford in July 2001. Newly promoted to Division one for 2020, they will hope to fare better than last time when Surrey won by an innings and 55 runs inside 3 days.
In 2001, Northants won the toss and were skittled out for 120 with Alex Tudor taking 5-54 and Ed Giddins 3-18. Fears that it could be a low scoring match were dispelled by Surrey’s reply which was built round a century from Ali Brown, his 103 coming off 140 balls.
Well supported by 47 from skipper Adam Hollioake, 46 from Michael Carberry and an unbeaten 42 from Ian Salisbury they totalled 368, a lead of 248. Northants’ second innings once more showed their fragility against quick bowling as Guildford’s own Martin Bicknell tore through their batting, taking 7-60 from his 21 overs; Mike Hussey and Graeme Swann top scoring for the visitors with 41 apiece.
Matches start at 11.00 am with the gates opening at 9.30 am.
